double clanger

“Old” English for double chainring. Clanging is the noise it makes when this goes wrong…  it probably originates in the age old debate over the worth of the multiple gears due to their problems shifting compared to single chainrings which makes it pretty “old”…

It was in 1923 Luciene Juy introduces the Simplex, the first rear derailleur with a parallel movement and the front derailleur which allowed using one of the two available chainrings.

Campagnolo in 1949 the Italians change their tactics and produce a derailleur similar to the Simplex, which goes sideways and is moved with the help of cables. A year later they put out on the market what we could consider the first modern derailleur, with a rectangular cage and pulleys. From here on its construction was refined using different materials and providing better finishing but the basic principle remained the same.

is an; Encyclopaedia of Cycling Lingo, expanding the cycling vernacular down lesser travelled paths. Part Wiki in nature we get there’s a lot of unspoken crossover across waters and disciplines.

Terms and phrases will travel and change, as do languages as they develop and fade or grow, this is taken from an British English speaking vernacular mainly, but with additions from other countries too, of course many influences come from the French and Italians, Australians and USA.
